SUM FUNCTION
We use the Sum Function to perform addition. Unlike any mathematical expressions, we use the equal sign (=) at the beginning of the formula.
Type =SUM(
Then drag the cursor from the first given number to the last. In the example, it's 5 & 7 or cells B2 & B3. Close the formula by either pressing ENTER, or by closing the parenthesis then ENTER.
Note: The NAME BOX above shows the function we are using while on this image, it shows the reference of the active cell.
The FORMULA BAR shows the value of the cell and not the result of the formula.
KNOWLEDGE CHECK:
Using the image below, find the total number of pages read by Jane and Jack. Re-type the values in an excel worksheet then follow the steps above to find the answer.
The total should be 125.
ALTERNATIVE :
There's an alternative way to add the given values by using the plus (+) sign.
Remember: This method is only recommended if you're only adding two values. Use the initial method we've learned if you're adding three or more values to save time.
